Stolen Uranium Seized

TALLINN, Estonia () -- Authorities in Estonia said Friday they were investigating a case involving industrial uranium smuggled from Russia and recently seized in a rural Estonian town.

Three kilograms of low-enriched uranium oxide were found buried under a garage at a private home in Polva, a small town close to the Russian border and about 200 kilometers southeast of Tallinn.

"The investigation is continuing and there probably will be many people involved in this," said Holger Siigert, deputy chief of the Estonian Defense Police.

The uranium, which cannot be used to produce weapons, was found Aug. 17, but Estonian police released news of the seizure for the first time late Thursday.
