Satellite Launched

MOSCOW () -- Russia launched a military satellite from the Baikonur space complex in neighboring Kazakhstan, Itar-Tass reported Monday.

The Kosmos-2290 satellite was launched Sunday night and entered orbit "almost exactly according to plan." Baikonur was the Soviet Union's main space launch facility, but has been at the center of a dispute between Russia and Kazakhstan since the Soviet breakup in 1991.

While talks continue on a Baikonur lease, Russia still uses the aging facility for manned space missions and for some unmanned launches.
