Police Stop Strikers

TIRANA () -- Albanian police Friday broke up a seven-day hunger strike by about 2,500 former political prisoners seeking compensation for wrongs suffered under the communist regime, according to an official communique.

The Interior Ministry said police had acted to implement a court ruling ordering the hunger strikers to disperse in major Albanian cities, including the capital Tirana. In rejecting the claims of the ex-political prisoners the government said it could not afford to pay out the equivalent of the millions of dollars they demanded. It accused the strike leaders of attempting to destabilize Albania's fragile democracy.
