Police Seek PLO Signal

GAZA () -- The head of the Palestinian police said Wednesday he could stop a wave of attacks by Palestinian militants on Israelis and improve security in self-rule areas if he had a vital "political decision" from the Palestine Liberation Organization to do so.

Major General Nasr Youssef said in an interview that political decision-makers "should identify a clear policy on how to deal with armed opposition elements."

Israel has demanded the Palestinian self-rule authority take tough action against Hamas and other Palestinian groups fighting the PLO-Israeli peace accord by attacking Israelis. But police officers say PLO leaders had told them to release 40 Hamas activists arrested after attacks last week.
