No-Aim Pact Signed

MOSCOW () -- Russia and China will sign an agreement not to target each other with strategic missiles early next month when Chinese President Jiang Zemin visits Moscow, a senior foreign ministry official said Tuesday.

Mikhail Bely, in charge of Far East affairs, told a news conference the agreement would be part of a package of documents to be signed during the Sept. 2-6 visit.

"It is largely a political move," he said when asked if an agreement not to target could be properly controlled. Russia and China built up huge military might aimed against each other after souring relations between two rival communist superpowers led to border clashes in the late 1960s.
