Navratilova Uncertain

MANHATTAN BEACH, California () -- Martina Navratilova's declaration that she is still uncertain about playing the U.S. Open later this month overshadowed the opening day of play at the $400,000 Virginia Slims of Los Angeles.

The second-seeded Navratilova is the defending champion and along with the other top eight seeds received a first round bye Monday in the week-long hard court tournament. Wimbledon champion Conchita Martinez is top-seeded. Navratilova, who has announced that 1994 will be her final year on tour, said that she will make her decision after this tournament.

Highlighting the on-court action was a 7-6, 7-5 victory by 16th-seeded Pam Shriver over Erika de Lone of the U.S. and Angelica Gavaldon's upset of 11th-seeded Natalia Medvedeva of Russia 6-2, 6-2.
