Nationalists Get Posts

BUCHAREST () -- Romania's minority leftist government, increasingly dependent on support from nationalist parties, has given one of them its first cabinet posts.

Prime Minister Nicolae Vacaroiu brought in Adrian Turicu as communications minister and Valeriu Tabar as agriculture minister. Both are members of the Romanian National Unity Party.

Political analysts said they suspected Vacaroiu was shoring up his support among fractious leftist and nationalist allies in case of a possible no-confidence motion over economic reform when the Romanian parliament reconvenes in September.

The reshuffle followed a new warming in ties between powerful Romanian trade unions and the Democractic Convention, the main political opposition.
