Kuchma Fires Minister

KIEV () -- Ukraine's newly elected president fired Foreign Minister Anatoly Zlenko on Thursday and appointed Gennady Udovenko as his acting successor.

President Leonid Kuchma has repeatedly promised to reshuffle the ministry's leadership to streamline Ukraine's foreign policy.

Udovenko, 63, served as Ukraine's ambassador to the United Nations, and then as ambassador to Poland. His candidacy must be approved by the Ukrainian parliament when it meets next month after its summer recess.
