Farmers Plan Protests

MOSCOW () -- Russian farmers, reluctant to sell grain to the state because of uncertainty over new prices, are threatening to ruffle this summer's social calm with a demonstration Thursday.

The deputy head of the conservative Agrarian Party, Alexander Mikhailov, told Itar-Tass that thousands of farmers were expected to take part in an "All-Russia Rural Gathering" at the arched entrance to Moscow's Gorky Park.

Farmers say they were short-changed by the state for last year's crops, which were paid for with long delays at prices that failed to take inflation into account. They are also seeking sharp increases in this year's grain-procurement prices.
