Explosion Kills 79

MANILA, Philippines () -- An explosion in the Philippines' largest underground coal mine left at least 79 workers dead and 20 missing in the country's worst mine disaster, officials said Tuesday.

Chito Samonte, a vice president of the oil company, said the explosion took place at 7:45 P.M. Monday inside a tunnel at the mine near Malangas, about 800 kilometers south of Manila.

One official said miners hit a pocket of methane gas that exploded, but a local mayor said the accident was triggered by a dynamite explosion.
