Dispute Threatens Cup

SYDNEY () -- The reputation of the America's Cup as yachting's most prestigious regatta is under threat because of a row over tobacco sponsorship, an Australian challenger said on Thursday.

The One Australia syndicate said the dispute was threatening the event's future by reducing its appeal to potential corporate sponsors.

The dispute centers on One Australia's $7.4 million sponsorship deal with Philip Morris Group, a multinational cigarette, food, packaging and finance company.

One Australia said America's Cup '95, the organizing body for next year's regatta off San Diego, had warned the syndicate it could face disqualification unless it dropped the company name in line with an existing ban on tobacco advertising.
