Deficit With Japan Up

WASHINGTON () -- The overall U.S. deficit on trade in goods and services narrowed modestly in June, despite a steep rise in the shortfall with Japan, the Commerce Department said Thursday.

The total deficit eased 1.6 percent to $9.37 billion from a revised $9.52 billion as growth in exports outstripped rising imports.

But the controversial deficit with Japan, the country that accounts for the bulk of America's persistent monthly deficits, swelled 26 percent to $5.52 billion from $4.39 billion.
