Danes Set Elections

COPENHAGEN, Denmark () -- Denmark's Social Democratic prime minister Monday called new elections on Sept. 21, hoping to capitalize on a recent surge in public support.

The election will be the first for the four-party governing coalition, led by Prime Minister Poul Nyrup Rasmussen, who was obliged to call elections by December.

Rasmussen became head of government in 1992 without elections, succeeding a decade of Conservative-led governments.

The announcement was made the same day a Gallup poll showed that the Social Democratic-led government would gain 38.3 percent of the ballots.
