Dam Death Toll Rises

n MOSCOW () -- Rescuers have recovered 15 bodies and continued to search for 55 people still missing after a dam burst in the Ural Mountains, officials said Wednesday.

A 6-meter high wall of water swept over the town of Tirlyan, Bashkortostan and three nearby villages, when the dam on the Tirlyansk reservoir collapsed Sunday night after heavy rains in the area, about 1,400 kilometers east of Moscow.

A spokeswoman for the Emergency Situations Ministry said 55 residents were confirmed missing as of Wednesday morning.

Officials said the flooding had destroyed about 80 houses and damaged an additional 220, resulting in an estimated 10 billion rubles ($5 million) in damage.

Meanwhile, rivers and reservoirs in another Urals region, Chelyabinsk, were spilling over from the heaviest rains there in 90 years.
