Cuban Talks Urgent

WASHINGTON () -- The United States expects Cuba to try to broaden this week's talks despite Washington's aim to restrict them to the crisis over Cuban boat people, the State Department said Monday.

Officials of the two deeply hostile countries are due to meet in New York for the 12th round in a series of talks on migration held sporadically over the last 10 years. These are now urgent because of the flood of more than 17,000 refugees that have attempted to reach the United States in recent weeks.

Cuba has long said it wants to discuss the U.S. trade embargo against the communist-ruled island.
