Cholera Hits Kazakhs

ALMATY () -- Two cases of cholera have been reported in the Kazakh capital Almaty and the cholera virus has been found in a river winding through the city, Health Ministry officials said Wednesday.

They said the disease first appeared in Kazakhstan on July 21, when two cases were reported in the southern city of Chimkent. They said cholera had been brought to Kazakhstan by travelers from the Indian subcontinent.

Reports of cholera from Kazakhstan follow an outbreak in Russia's semi-autonomous republic of Dagestan in the northern Caucasus, which has killed 12 people over last two weeks.
