Cholera Epidemic Abates

The pace of the cholera epidemic in southern Russia is slowing and health authorities have it under control, Itar-Tass reported Monday.

Nearly 300 people remain hospitalized for cholera in the Dagestan region, Health Minister Eduard Nechayev was quoted as saying. The epidemic already has caused at least 18 deaths.

But 451 of the 751 people diagnosed for cholera have been cured of the disease and have been allowed to go home, he said.

A week ago, health authorities reported 609 confirmed cases of cholera.

"The situation in Dagestan is still very tense but it is fully under the control of the Health Ministries," Itar-Tass said.
