Chernobyl Dump Set

KIEV () -- Ukraine plans to construct a huge storage dump to bury radioactive material from the so-called "dead zone" around Chernobyl, site of the world's worst nuclear accident, officials said.

Work on the project is scheduled to begin November and finish in the year 2000.

Three factories will be built to crush, burn or smelt the contaminated material from the 1986 blast. It will be placed in containers and buried in a 500,000-cubic meter underground storage plant.

The proposed site is close to the Chernobyl nuclear plant, according to Valentyn Kupny, deputy chief administrator for the restricted Chernobyl zone.
