Channel Ferry Burns

LONDON () -- Lifeboats and helicopters joined in an international operation to rescue more than 100 people from a burning cross-channel ferry Thursday, coast guards and firefighters said.

Helicopters, lifeboats and tugs were sent from Britain and Belgium to rescue the 104 crew and 17 passengers from the Sally Star, which reported an engine fire as it approached the port of Ramsgate on the southeastern English coast.

One crewman was slightly injured but officials said all the passengers had been safely rescued, air force officials said. While the ship normally transports cars and passengers, on this trip it had been carrying freight, a spokeswoman for Sally Star said.
