Border Guard Wounded

MOSCOW () -- A Russian border guard officer in Tajikistan was seriously injured during an operation to hunt down rebels operating from neighboring Afghanistan, Interfax said Sunday.

Lieutenant Vladimir Letun, 24, was part of a team looking for a small group of Tajik rebels who had hidden themselves in a valley after crossing the Afghan border.

Border guard officials also said the rebels had fired at least 13 shells at Russian border positions Saturday.

In return Russian artillery shelled suspected guerrilla targets.

Last week seven border guards were killed and 13 wounded when the rebels attacked the Russian force policing Tajik borders.
