After Slight Scare, Australians Beat Puerto Ricans

TORONTO -- Steady Andrew Gaze helped Australia survive a late hiccup to beat Puerto Rico 94-81 and Canada demolished China at the world championship of basketball.

Gaze scored a game-high 34 points, shooting 8-for-9 from the field and 4-for-9 from 3-point range, and stabilized the Australians down the stretch as Puerto Rico made a late surge in Thursday's game. The Puerto Ricans whittled a 24-point lead to as little as 7 before Gaze took charge and the Aussies pulled away again.

Canada spread out its scoring in a 90-48 victory over China. Martin Keane scored 18 points, Rick Fox had 14, Joey Vickery tallied 12.

Weidong Hu came off the bench to lead China with 22 points as the Asians shot a miserable 31 percent compared to Canada's 55 percent.

The four teams in action at the Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto are in the bottom half of the quarter-finals. Though they were eliminated from semifinal contention before Thursday's games, their final ranking here helps determine whether they make the next Olympics.
