U.S. Seeks UN Approva

UNITED NATIONS -- The United States asked Monday for UN authorization for a possible U.S.-led multinational invasion of Haiti to restore democracy in the Caribbean nation, and asked for UN observers to monitor the mission.

The draft resolution, submitted to the Security Council, set no deadline for launching the operation or for removing Haiti's military rulers, who forced out democratically elected President Jean-Bertrand Aristide in 1991.

The U.S-led mission would be replaced by a 6,000-member UN mission, as soon as stability is restored, said a U.S. official.

The council was expected to begin considering the proposal Tuesday, aiming for a vote by the end of the week.
