Many Rue Soviet Split

MOSCOW -- A majority of Russians rue the breakup of the Soviet Union and would like see at least part of it reunited, a new survey by the independent Mnenie polling service says.

More than 68 percent of the people queried in the nationwide survey said Russia, Ukraine and Belarus erred when they pulled out of the U.S.S.R. in 1991, precipitating the Soviet collapse.

More than 88 percent said Belarus and Russia should form a closer union and 87.5 percent said Ukraine and Russia should have closer ties.

More than 68 percent of the people questioned said a merger of Russia, Ukraine and Belarus was possible and nearly half said they expected it before the year 2000.
