Israel Bars Palestinians

GAZA CITY -- Israel barred thousands of Palestinian workers Monday from entering Israel after a riot at the main crossing point the day before in which three Israeli soldiers were injured.

The army also imposed restrictions on the two largest West Bank towns, Hebron and Nablus, where round-the-clock curfews were in force that kept nearly 200,000 Palestinians off the streets.

The restrictions on Gaza came after several thousand Palestinians stormed the Erez border terminal in an attempt to enter Israel. The army said the ban was necessary to allow for reorganization of the crossing.

Also Monday, Jewish settlers vacated government-built houses they took over in the West Bank on Friday in response to the murder of a 17-year-old Israeli girl last week.
