FC Barcelona Gets Hagi, but As for Lalas ...

BARCELONA -- Romanian striker Gheorghe Hagi, one of the stars of this summer's World Cup, has signed a two-year contract with FC Barcelona, said club vice president Joan Gaspart.

Hagi, who has played for Brescia since the fall of 1992, will join the club Aug. 1 when Spain's top team presents its players for the 1994-1995 season, Gaspart said Monday.

Barcelona's Dutch coach Johan Cruyff "wanted Hagi, and now we've got him," Gaspart told reporters.

Gaspart said he had resolved minor differences over Hagi's contract Monday in discussions with the player's agent before announcing the deal.

Despite conflicting reports, the Italian soccer club Padova said Monday that United States World Cup player Alexi Lalas is to sign with it this week.

But the U.S. Soccer Federation, which has the rights to Lalas' contract until it expires on Oct. 31, said no deal had been struck with any club.

Federation spokesman Tom Lang said in Chicago the completion of any deal is at least a week away. The English club Coventry spoke with Lalas at the weekend, as did Bochum, a German club.
