Romanian Sit-In

BUCHAREST -- Thousands of Romanian workers staged a sit-in on the road outside the prime minister's office and awaited reinforcement by busloads of miners on Wednesday, the second day of a planned week-long protest over poverty. About 3,500 people camped out in Bucharest's Victory Square, in front of Prime Minister Nicolae Vacaroiu's cabinet offices, which were ringed by armed police and anti-riot vehicles. The unions are pressing for 50 percent pay rises, retirement rights and a review of wage differentials.
