Ghirotto Takes Leg 19

BRA, Italy -- Italian Massimo Ghirotto resisted his three challengers to win the 19th stage of the Giro d'Italia after they had escaped nearly 100 kilometers from the finish of the 212-kilometer race from Lavagna. Ghirotto, 33, held off Dane Rolf Sorensen with Italians Massimo Podenzana and Rodolfo Massi third and fourth, but had to persuade the race leader, Yevgeny Berzin of Russia, to leave their group when the move started during Thursday's stage. Ghirotto pleaded with Berzin that he should drop back to the main field so that their effort might succeed. Berzin then raced in with the main field, two minutes and 21 seconds behind Ghirotto, to maintain his overnight lead of two minutes and 55 seconds over Italian Marco Pantini.
