Surrey Cruises Into Semifinals

LONDON -- Surrey batsman David Ward smashed 73 in 57 deliveries Wednesday to power his county into the semifinals of the Benson and Hedges Cup. Ward's whirlwind innings, containing six sixes and three fours, set up a Surrey victory over Nottinghamshire at Trent Bridge after the home side had put up a testing total of 275 for eight. Surrey, led by Ward and Darren Bicknell, who compiled 109, eased home at 278 for four in 51.4 overs. Warwickshire also reached the semifinals, but only after beating Kent 5-4 in a bowl-out in the indoor school at Edgbaston after the match was rained off. Earlier Tuesday cup holder Derbyshire crashed out of this year's competition, destroyed by a burst of six for 16 in 30 deliveries from Worcestershire's medium-fast bowler Stuart Lampitt. Derbyshire was routed for 98 in 44 of their 55 overs after a rain-delayed start Tuesday, and Worcestershire swept to a nine-wicket quarterfinal victory at 100 for one in 18.2 overs.
