Less than thrilled about the idea of cooking kasha breakfasts for your pet? Getting bored with watching the same old guppies cruising around your aquarium? Fear not. Moscow stores are becoming more animal friendly every day. Probably the largest supply of goods can be found at Zoo Magazin, 30 Ulitsa Arbat, tel. 241-7182. The store is open Monday to Saturday 10 A.M. to 7 P.M. and Sundays from 11 A.M. to 5 P.M. It stocks a variety of fish ranging from guppies at 500 rubles (26 cents) apiece to mini swordfish for 3,000 rubles apiece. Tetramin brand fish food is priced between 2,500 and 6,000 rubles a canister. There is also a variety of birds, from a Japanese Anadina at 11,000 rubles to a large parrot at 500,000, as well as mice at 5,000 rubles each, guinea pigs at 25,000 rubles each, turtles at 15,000 rubles and hamsters at 3,000 rubles. Bird cages are in plentiful supply, ranging from basic metal cages for 9,000 rubles and up, to an ornate wooden pen for 90,000 rubles. Cat collars start at 5,500 rubles, and a selection of leads and leashes for dogs cost 7,000 to 15,000 rubles, with an extendable leash going for 31,000 rubles. Aquariums run from 8,000 to 14,000 rubles, worming tablets from 7,500 rubles, and a variety of grooming brushes from 3,000 rubles each. In addition, the store has a wide range of dog food such as Chappi and Pedigree Pal from 1,800 to 3,500 rubles per can, cat food from Whiskas, Kit-E-Kat, and Purina from 1,900 to 3,300 rubles for cans, 3,300 rubles a box, and food bowls from 3,500 to 25,000 rubles each. There is a smaller branch of the store at 26 Malaya Bronnaya Ulitsa that only stocks pet supplies. Rubles only. Another store that features a small pet department is the Roditi supermarket at 23 Ulitsa Novy Arbat, tel. 964-4984. It is open Monday to Saturday 9 A.M. to 7 P.M. The supermarket generally offers a range of products from Pedigree/Exelpet, including collars, extension leashes and dog food. The most comprehensive pet department can be found at the Garden Ring Supermarket at 1 Bolshaya Sadovaya, tel. 209-1572. It is open daily from 9 A.M. to 9 P.M. In addition to a large collection of collars and leads, the store stocks Hartz flea shampoo at $3.30, worming powder at $2.75, and flea collars at $6.65. It also sells bags of kitty litter for $3.95 each and a wide range of pet food brands. Rubles and dollars, or credit cards.
