Russian counterintelligence agents arrested several police and other law enforcement officers who allegedly took bribes to let accused criminals walk free, Itar-Tass reported Wednesday. The arrested authorities had accepted hundreds of thousands of dollars from criminal groups for their help in releasing suspects accused of murder, hostage-taking, robbery, burglary and other crimes, the news agency said. Among those arrested by the Federal Counterintelligence Service were a senior officer of the Interior Ministry's investigation department, a Moscow police officer and a defense lawyer. Itar-Tass did not identify them by name or say when they were arrested. Vladimir Tomarovsky, a spokesman for the Federal Counterintelligence Service, refused to comment. Itar-Tass said that during the arrest, counterintelligence officers confiscated hundreds of thousands of dollars, gold jewelry, precious gems and firearms. The public prosecutor's office has started an investigation into the case
