Labour Sets Vote Date

LONDON ? Britain's main opposition Labour party said Wednesday it would name a successor to its late leader John Smith on July 21 after an election billed as Western Europe's biggest exercise in party democracy. In a surprise move likely to boost the leadership chances of Tony Blair ? the party's home-affairs spokesman ? deputy leader Margaret Beckett said that she wanted a ballot for her position to take place at the same time. Beckett did not rule out standing for either or both jobs. Party chairman David Blunkett said Labour had decided a quick election would take advantage of the unpopularity of Prime Minister John Major's Conservative government.
