Kiev Deactivates Arms

KIEV -- Ukraine has taken off military alert nearly all 46 of its SS-24 strategic missiles, the most sophisticated in the former Soviet nuclear arsenal, Kiev defense officials said Wednesday. "The process of deactivization is nearly complete. There are only a few SS-24 missiles left to deactivate," Defense Ministry spokesman Major Anatoly Murakhovsky said. "The nuclear warheads have been removed and the flight patterns have been deprogramed," he said. Each missile holds 10 nuclear warheads, all of which were directed at the United States. Defense Ministry sources also said Ukraine had this week sent a third shipment of 60 nuclear warheads to Russia for dismantling in accordance with an agreement signed in January by the presidents of Ukraine, Russia and the United States.
