Azeris Join Peace Plan

n BRUSSELS () -- Azerbaijan signed NATO's Partnership for Peace on Wednesday and the former Soviet republic urged the alliance to support it in ending the six-year conflict with neighboring Armenia. President Heidar Aliyev said he hoped "that our participation in the NATO program" would "make it possible to achieve the soonest peaceful and just settlement," as he signed the deal on closer military links with the West. NATO Deputy Secretary-General Sergio Balanzino said the alliance could not take new initiatives on its own but Azerbaijan could call for crisis consultations on the conflict over Nagorno-Karabakh as part of the partnership. Azerbaijan was the 15th country to sign the scheme.
