Work Yields to Soccer

Iran has rescheduled some high school exams this year to avoid clashing with the World Cup soccer finals in the United States.

High school graduation examinations for boys would be taken before the June 17 World Cup kickoff to avoid a "drop in performance," said Education Minister Mohammad Ali Najafi, quoted by Iranian television Monday.

Soccer is the most popular sport in Iran. Foreign matches are widely broadcast on state television since a 1987 fatwa by the late spiritual leader Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini who, asked about the propriety of showing bare-legged soccer players, ruled that it was OK.
