Warne, Reiffel Record

A record 119-run partnership between tailenders Paul Reiffel and Shane Warne only narrowly failed to turn a remarkable recovery into victory as South Africa beat Australia by 26 runs in a one-day international.

Batting in appalling lighting conditions in the second day-night match of the series, Australia collapsed to 77 for 7 in reply to South Africa's 227 for 6 scored in bright afternoon sunshine.

But seamer Reiffel and wrist spinner Warne threw caution to the wind Monday. They tore into the South African bowling with both scoring personal one-day bests as they established a world record for the eighth-wicket, beating the 117 set by Zimbabwe's Dave Houghton and Iain Butchart against New Zealand at Hyderabad in the 1987 World Cup.
