Victory for Veterans

British World War II veterans have claimed victory in the "battle of the hotel rooms" after a retreat by French authorities allowed them to reclaim bookings for June's D-Day celebrations in northern France.

France denied Monday that it had ordered 200 veterans' bookings to be canceled and promised no former soldier would lose his hotel bed, after British ex-soldiers complained the authorities had canceled their hotel reservations to make room for foreign dignitaries.

British and Canadian veterans, who invaded France in 1944 to liberate it from German occupation, had pledged to go in with "guns blazing" to enforce their rights.
