Tajik Dambusters Foiled

The Russian military claims it blocked an attempt by Tajik rebels last year to blow up a dam in Tajikistan that would have flooded more than 2,000 villages in Central Asia.

Itar-Tass quoted military sources as saying militants had planned to drive three explosives-laden trucks into the tunnels of the Nurek dam in the Pamir mountains of Tajikistan.

Soldiers reportedly stopped the sabotage attempt in a gunbattle that killed two of the Russians and wounded several others.

Military experts said an explosion of the dam would have generated a wave 86 meters high, flooding an area 53 kilometers wide and 1,385 kilometers long, submerging more than 2,000 villages in Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan.
