Penguins Edge Capitals 2-1 in Playoff

PITTSBURGH, Pennsylvania -- The Pittsburgh Penguins have the script down pat.

After losing the playoff opener for the seventh time in their last 11 series, the Penguins on Tuesday night improved to 8-0 on home ice in Game 2 of a playoff series, edging the Washington Capitals 2-1 to tie their Eastern Conference quarterfinals series 1-1. Game 3 will be Thursday night in Landover, Maryland.

In Tuesday night's only other contest, the New Jersey Devils defeated the Buffalo Sabres 2-1 to level their series at 1-1.

The Penguins rode Tom Barrasso's goaltending to victory. Barrasso stopped 34 of 35 shots and Pittsburgh's Mario Lemieux and Rick Tocchet both scored in the first period. The Penguins won despite managing only four shots on goal in the final two periods -- three in the second and only one in the third.

Michal Pivonka scored Washington's lone goal 57 seconds into the second period on a power play.

Devils 2, Sabres 1. In East Rutherford, New Jersey, Scott Stevens scored with 6:21 to play on a shot deflected by a Buffalo player to lift the New Jersey Devils past Buffalo and even their best-of-7 series at 1-1. Their Eastern Conference quarterfinal now moves to Buffalo for games Thursday and Saturday before returning here for Game 5 Monday.
