Nations Mull Aluminum Output Cut

BRUSSELS -- Government delegates from the world's major aluminum-producing countries, including Brazil, Venezuela and the Gulf States, are expected to discuss a deal to cut output on Thursday, European officials said.

"The European Commission is in favor," a Commission spokesman said on Wednesday but added that no decisions were expected from this week's meeting.

European industry sources said it would be helpful if more producing countries participated. "They can't remain free riders," one source said.

But any attempt to involve more countries in output cuts would have to conform with strict U.S. anti-trust laws, officials cautioned. The U.S., Russia, Canada, Norway, Australia and the EU are due to review progress in implementing output cuts formally endorsed in Ottawa early last month.
