King Gets $3.8 Million

A jury has awarded more than $3.8 million in damages to Rodney King, the black motorist whose videotaped beating at the hands of white police officers ultimately led to the worst U.S. riots this century.

Tuesday's award was significantly less than the $15 million damages King's lawyers had demanded but well above the $800,000 the city said was a fair sum.

The multiracial jury was ordered to return to court Thursday for the second phase of the trial proceedings to determine punitive damages to be paid by the four officers involved in the beating.
