Japanese Arrested for Smuggling

A Japanese man faces three to 10 years in prison if convicted by a Russian court of smuggling cash and crabmeat across Russia's borders, Interfax reported Tuesday.

Interfax said Eno Hirosi, a textile designer, is accused of carrying 15 million yen and $10,000 into Russia and declaring only a small portion of the money at customs in the Pacific port of Khabarovsk last November.

Hirosi allegedly was involved in a plan to export 6.5 tons of Russian crabmeat, which is highly prized in Japan.

Hirosi was released on bail March 23 and faces charges in the Kholmsky People's Court in the Russian Far East. Interfax did not say when he is scheduled to go on trial.
