Facelift for Stadium

The Furiani stadium in Corsica, scene of a soccer tragedy two years ago when 15 people died after a temporary stand collapsed, is to be rebuilt this year.

France's sports minister Michele Alliot-Marie said on Tuesday that an 8,700-seater stadium costing 32 million francs ($5.7 million) would be erected on the present site at Bastia.

She said the government would fund up to 40 percent of the costs. An earlier plan, for which the French government in 1992 offered backing of only 7 million francs, foundered for lack of support. Second division Bastia, which uses the stadium, looks likely to be promoted to the first division this summer.
