Defense Staff Picket White House for Pay

Workers of Russia's defense industry Tuesday picketed the White House and threatened strike if they are not paid. A crowd of roughly 300 workers from over 100 defense factories across Russia stood outside the White House's main entrance waving angry posters and demanding to meet with Prime Minister Viktor Chernomyrdin. Sergei Shulkin, leader of the Defense Industry Worker's Union, said the union's 1.5 million members would decide soon whether to hold a nationwide strike based on Chernomyrdin's response. So far he has not responded. The protesters want the government to pay months of back wages and to establish tax breaks for the industry. The defense industry has suffered more than most since the Soviet Union collapsed, with production falling 30 percent over the past year.
