Austrian Poet on Trial

"Jailhouse poet" Jack Unterweger, a convicted murderer who became a protege of Austria's literary highbrows, went on trial Wednesday accused of strangling 11 prostitutes in a year-long killing spree.

In what Austrian papers have called the trial of the century, the dapper 43-year-old writer is accused of picking up and doing away with 11 women between September 1990 and July 1991 in Austria, the Czech Republic and the United States.

Unterweger was paroled from a life sentence for murder in 1990, helped by his own good conduct in prison and appeals from cultural figures who pointed to his writings as the proof of a reformed character.
