An Open Window Of Opportunity

Editor: In the Opinion Page comment "Russian Bear is Back" (April 12), I think Vladimir Pozner is viewing the "unique window of opportunity" in the wrong light. Yes, Russia is in need of a solid economic plan, and a Marshall Plan would be wonderful. Studying here in Moscow since last August I have witnessed the many problems Russia faces. But I think the window of opportunity has been opened. As an avid reader of the Times, I have read many opinions that seem all to conclude that the United States should do this or do that in helping Russia. I don't think the United States should be the answer to all of this country's problems. One of the main reasons I am here in Moscow studying is because President Yeltsin visited my university and helped set up a student exchange program with my state's government. Because of exchanges like these, the windows of opportunity have opened wide. Given this chance, many American and Russian students are learning much more than the language of each other's countries; we are learning about ourselves, our governments, the immense mixture of culture and people that make up our countries, and we are learning to bury the old myths that separated our two countries across time and distance. With student exchange programs like these that benefit both countries, our two worlds do not seem so far apart. And the windows of opportunity become filled with a full spectrum of colors.
