Ames Agrees to Deal

WASHINGTON -- Accused CIA spy Aldrich Ames and his wife Rosario have agreed tentatively to a deal in which they would admit their guilt and he would cooperate with investigators, Clinton administration officials said Tuesday. The officials said the couple, accused of passing secrets to Moscow for years in what is one of the worst spy cases in U.S. history, have essentially completed negotiations on the plea bargain. The officials said the deal could become official at a court hearing in nearby Alexandria, Virginia, as early as Thursday. They had previously said Ames, a 31-year CIA veteran, would have to serve life in prison as part of a deal in which his Colombian-born wife would get leniency.
