Uzbek Sprints Ahead

Uzbek Djamolidine Abdoujaparov changed his normal tactics to win the first stage of the De Panne three-day race.

Abdoujaparov, who wins most races in sprints, made a breakaway 15 kilometers from the end of Tuesday's 173-kilometer stage and crossed the line 10 seconds before Belgian Ludwig Willems.

Italians Fabio Roscioli and Guido Bontempi finished third and fourth. Abdoujaparov, nicknamed the Tashkent Express, broke free from Willems and Bontempi in search of Roscioli. He caught Roscioli and left him behind to claim an unusual solo victory.
