Ukraine Pleases IMF

Ukrainian and International Monetary Fund officials said Wednesday that an IMF mission "made good progress" during a two-week working visit to Kiev.

"The talks were positive," said Yury Vechir, a Ukrainian official responsible for relations with international financial organizations.

IMF representative Lawrence De Milner said progress was made on "a stabilization and reform program which could be supported by a Systemic Transformation Facility loan."

He said President Leonid Kravchuk would meet IMF managing director Michel Camdessus in Washington this week.

Ukraine hopes to qualify for a $700 million loan from the IMF under the STF facility, a lending program specially developed for former Soviet republics.
