Sato Skates to Title

Yuka Sato of Japan delighted her own adoring fans by winning the women's world figure skating championship on Saturday -- but her triumph upset second-placed Surya Bonaly who took off her medal in a tearful and dramatic podium protest.

At first, France's European champion refused to mount the rostrum. An official persuaded her to change her mind and stand alongside Sato but she removed the medal moments after the official presentation and held it in her hand while the Japanese national anthem was played.

The Tokyo student had squeezed out victory over Bonaly by the slender margin of five judges' votes to four.
