Satellite Will Probe Sun

A Russian satellite launched Wednesday will try to throw more light on the source of light itself, examining the structure of the sun to find out more about how it works.

Itar-Tass said the Koronas project was a joint effort between Russia, Ukraine, Poland, Bulgaria, the Czech and Slovak Republics, the United States, France and Germany.

The satellite will be in orbit for six or seven years, spending long periods out of the shadow of the earth. Probes aboard the craft will measure solar activity and try to find out more about the sun's internal structure, Itar-Tass said.
